View Full Version : Suggestions no new gpu setup: K-series or GTX

It is time to update my cards due to the increased demand and render times getting in the way of things. My current setup is Quadro 4000, 600 and a Tesla C2075. Based on paper I want to try out the Kepler technology but I remember the performance wasn't that great at the time these cards launched. My work is still a bit hesitant on using GTX cards in place of our traditional workstation cards so right now I'm just trying to get a few ideas for a great, fast GPU setup.

The K5000 would certainly handle my CAD and 3D modeling tasks but how does it perform these days with Shot? Will I notice drastic reduction in realtime ray tracing and animation rendering times compared to my current 4000, 600, Tesla 2075 setup? I know the CUDA cores are like quadruple the amount I currently have but after reading thru the benchmark thread again on here I was disappointed to see that even having all those extra CUDA cores on the newer Kepler cards, the results weren't anything I would of been happy about, especially considering the cost of all those cards. Is the same still true today or has Nvidia optimized their newer cards to work with iray and renderers better? This forum and section has been pretty dead so I'm just wondering if times have changed on these cards now that they've been out for a while.

Basically would a K5000 be significantly faster than my 4000, 600 and C2075 combined (I think that's around >900 CUDA cores or so and 3GB vram total)?
If not, what would you chose if you had a $2000 budget to upgrade the cards in your rig (GTX setups are OK too)?
For software I use primarily Autodesk products for my modeling (Inventor, 3DSMax, mudbox, etc) and Shot Pro for my final rendering and animations.

Get 3x used GTX 580's with after market air cooling. Best performance per dollar. Or if you are temperature/wattage conscious and money is not an object, get 3x780's.

I would like to try 3 gaming cards (I run an EVGA ACX SC GTX780 in my home gaming rig) but IT just isn't feeling warm and fuzzy about me running anything other than workstation level cardsdue to drivers and crap (I know ....I know). While GTX cards would certainly be ideal for Bunkspeed, some of my other programs benefit more from workstation drivers than the lesser optimized GeForce drivers, so that's something I need to consider. What may be blistering fast in Shot may hinder me to a crawl snail pace elsewhere if it's in software that takes advantage of the optimized drivers.

I don't think a single K5000 is going to suit my needs and for that I've looked into running another Tesla combo or a dual K5000 combo...

2x K5000's = 3072 CUDA cores @ ~$3600
1x K5000 & 1x Tesla K20 = 4032 CUDA cores @ ~$4900

Is anyone on here running a K5000 and K20 combo and care to report your opinions on how it's been working out for you with Shot?

Woohoo just spoke with my boss and IT and they've agreed to let me build my render rig!!!! Going with 3 780 Ti's I think! Me is a happy camper now!

So here is the build I've pieced together. Thoughts? Anyone have any personal experiences with this motherboard or processor? Reviews seem good and it gives me the flexibility to run a fourth card if ever needed in the future.

While I don't have experience with the exact processor or motherboard listed, I think you would be very happy with this setup. We purchased a slightly toned down but similar setup late last year that just screams compared to our previous setup. This machine has been amazing even with only 2 GTX 780's. I look forward to filling the 2 extra GPU spaces on this and really seeing what it can do. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this setup.

Funny and ironic you mentioned that as I ended up changing my cpu and motherboard to the same exact as you have ;). After reading a nice review on guru3D about the 4820k (http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/core_i7_4820k_processor_review,1.html) I determined that it wasn't really any faster than the 4770k and Z87 chipset. Unless going 6 or 12 cores I didn't see the need to invest in that level of cpu for my render rig when I already have the 6 core 3960X in my Boxx rig. Plus I saved $100 on the build by changing sockets. My 4770k at home has been very impressive from the tests I've thrown at it, even at stock 3.5GHz.

So I'll use the Boxx rig for my CAD and simulation needs where the additional cores will matter most and use the new render rig as just a dedicated GPU renderer and Blender & 3DS Max rig. We started ordering the parts today from newegg. I made some changedCan't wait!!

Parts arrived today...well except for the damn fan controller!

That's exciting stuff. Looking forward to seeing it built up and the benchmark numbers it runs! Very interested to see the 3 x 780Ti versus my 2 x 780, since our machines are otherwise very similar.

I would agree on the higher end of that range. I'm guessing 26-27s as 3 standard 780s should do 28-29s, but I'm still hoping for low 20's.

Yeah, 20second isn't going to happen. I meant low 20's, meaning 21-24 seconds. These kepler cards are somewhat disappointing but I am still hoping to be wowed by them.

Yes in fact, Kepler + Iray have done roughly "nothing" in speed performance... But for other app it's often better.

Yup they are fun!

Test fitting the cards. It is tight and I'm glad I went with a motherboard that had wide equally spaced slots lol.

Initial boot..... It is alive!


Waiting on fan extension cables to arrive tomorrow. Only fan hooked up and running is the 140mm rear exhaust and the 4 SP120 rad fans. ROG OC Tuner panel has a nice clear display...

Well guys she is in the dungeon and she's pretty smokin fast according to the Bunkmark tests! I posted my results in that thread....and it's below 20's!

I also took some pics of the build with my DSLR to do it some justice. Hope you like!

To give you an idea of size those are 3 24" monitors and a 21" Cintiq....

Only thing I hate is the way the cables are run on them. I hate those stupid 6 pin connectors hanging off cluttering the look. I might look into custom cables later on or sleeving them to try and clean it up a little. Thanks for the comments!
